Special Salary Rates

A special rate is a rate of pay that is higher than the regular GS schedule. The higher pay rates are established when the government experiences difficulty in recruiting and retaining employees. Some examples of occupations that receive special rates are Engineers, Computer Scientists, and some clerical positions.

The Office of Personnel Management maintains special salary rate pay scales on their web site.
